I have been coming to Vivienne for nearly two years. In that time I have been delighted with the results especially how she works in conjunction with my personal trainer. I have in fact been so impressed that I have recommended her to two of my close friends.

"A bike is a symmetrical apparatus in a positional sense. The bars and pedal are equidistant from the centre line and the seat is over the centre line of the bike. Unfortunately all riders are bilaterally asymmetrical to varying degrees. Beyond a certain point this is a  major cause of injuries, niggles and lack of performance on a bike. I have referred a number of riders to Chiropaedic to address various issues of this type. After treatment by Vivienne, I have noted substantial improvements in the symmetry of these clients  and  their improved performances on the bike bear this out. I would recommend Vivienne as a competent source of treatment and advice on structural issues."

"1.7.2005, 11am – collision with an illegally parked van, cycle lane, blind corner by traffic congestion and NO Stopping Zone not withstanding , hit head first, resulting in collapsed vertebra at C3,C4, T4, T5 and T7 as well as 4 broken ribs and a punctured lung.

Chronic soft tissue and structural trauma have been the key areas of treatment by Vivienne Brimelow at ‘Chiropaedic’ including back, neck, shoulders, hips and knees due to influence of misshapen spinal forms resulting from the above accident.

To date the joints and soft tissue have responded very well to the ongoing treatment and retraining, I must persist with pain management medication, Chiropractic, rehabilitation exercises at gymnasiums and exercise therapy recently included at the ‘Chiropaedic’ clinic without which my condition is certain to deteriorate into major restriction of movement and flexibility and a severe reduction in the quality of life.

Without the services and quality treatment received at ‘Chiropaedic’, I would not be able to perform my current activities including the management and operation of Australian Time Trials Association NSW P/L as well as perform duties as required at work and remain self sufficient and generally enjoy the lifestyle I have; while drastically altered by the accident, (I no longer participate in rigorous bicycle training or competition) I am able to otherwise exercise and live a healthy lifestyle appropriate for my age (at 56 I am not overweight but will never realize my best race weight again unless I starve)."

My introduction to sling exercise therapy came via a roundabout way of 6+ months of injury of right patellar tendonitis and a tight right ITB band.  As a serious recreational and weekend racing cyclist who had never had a previous injury this proved extremely frustrating.  I initially trialed all the usual methods, rest, time off the bike, followed by light intensity rides, followed by more rest combined with physiotherapy sessions twice weekly.  All this achieved was the gradual decline in my form slipping, my time and enjoyment on the bike diminishing and a great deal of frustration as I looked for a solution.

3 months of weekly physiotherapy followed, with some minor improvement, that was soon diminished as soon as I undertook a ride longer than 1 and a half hours or a race occurred.  Eccentric exercises helped strengthen the tendon in the patellar however it still was sore and my right ITB would flare up even when off the bike.

This was immensely frustrating at this point, none of the traditional treatments for this type of injury worked for me.  Luckily living in Sydney I was able to get an appointment with Steve Hogg from Pedal Pushers for a complete bike fit.  He noted that my position on the bike wasn’t the problem, and only made minor adjustments.  What he did note was that I had a functional problem when on the bike, statically I was fine, functional I was a mess.  He diagnosed me with a short right leg and assumed it was functional, not structural.  He recommended I go and see an associate of his Vivienne Brimelow from Chiropaedic in Sydney as well.

A phone call to Vivienne landed me with a quick appointment due to a cancellation. After an initial consultation, Vivienne was able to confirm Steve’s initial assessment that my right leg was shorter, I had a forward rotated right pelvis, slight left head tilt and poor posture, my core stability and strength was assessed as low. A few weeks of regular treatments and adjustment corrected the functionally short leg and helped the joints in the pelvic area start to loosen up. At this point I was thankfully back on the bike with regularity, training and racing.

Vivienne suggested that to reduce the risk of re-injury, to have the pelvic and lower back function correctly and correct the head tilt that I try a few sessions on the sling exercise therapy.  The first session highlighted exactly what Vivienne had been telling me was true, I had very little core strength or stability.  I managed to get through the session, but it was quite a test.  A week later I went back and redid the same exercise session with a noticeable improvement in performance.  I’ve since completed around 10 sessions on the sling exercise therapy and it has not only greatly improved my core stability and strength but has resulted in improved power output on the bicycle as measured by my power meter along with a stronger position and more stability in time trials and climbing.  My patellar tendonitis has gone and my right ITB no longer causes issue.  My progression throughout the exercise sessions has been rapid, and I can see quantitative gains.

It is easy having used the system with a qualified instructor to see and experience the injury treatment and functional training benefits of the system and I plan to continue using sling exercise therapy as part of my exercise and wellbeing in future.
